Trader Roadmap

QSG, 2023. An intermediate stage as the firm grew, designed to support focus, collaboration, and sustained research.

Trader Roadmap

QSG’s trader roadmap is not a curriculum, a checklist, or a guaranteed timeline. It is a realistic view of how a new trader typically begins at the firm, gets live, and works toward building a real trading business over the first one to three years.

QSG backs traders with capital, infrastructure, and a collaborative environment. The trader is responsible for research, judgment, process, and results. Progress is not driven by tenure or by completing a program. It is driven by what the work looks like in practice.

The First 8 to 10 Weeks

The first phase is usually focused on research, building, and testing. A new trader is expected to spend this period developing initial strategies, learning how to work inside QSG’s environment, and proving that ideas can survive structured evaluation before capital is put at risk.

This is not a classroom period. It is where a trader begins turning ideas into live candidates. The expectation is that work moves from concept into something testable, with enough rigor that it can be considered for production.

Initial Live Deployment

Once a trader has work that is ready for live evaluation, strategies typically go live at test size for roughly 2 to 4 weeks. This period is not only about the strategy itself. It is also where the firm tests everything required to make the strategy tradable in the real world.

That includes market data delivery, FIX connections, broker routing, clearing, monitoring, and the broader production setup around the strategy. In practice, a meaningful part of risk does not come from the idea alone. It comes from everything that has to work correctly for the strategy to exist in live markets. This is where those risks get surfaced.

A trader who handles this phase well shows more than signal quality. They show operational discipline, sound judgment, and the ability to work responsibly inside a live trading environment.

The First Year

The first year is the ramp-up. If it takes roughly two to three months to get live and another month to test at small size, then a trader is often only beginning to trade in a meaningful way around month four or five. That is a long runway, and it is important to understand it clearly.

From that point through the end of the first year, the goal is to ramp up size as quickly as is responsible. QSG is often able to scale traders relatively quickly once the work supports it. The point is not to wait for arbitrary milestones. The point is to build enough trust in the strategies, the production setup, and the trader’s judgment that real opportunity can be captured when it appears.

A strong first year often ends with a portfolio of roughly 20 to 40 fully automated strategies and a trading business that is starting to look real. That does not mean the first year is usually the year of maximum earnings. In many cases, the economics are still modest while the foundation is being built. The real opportunity begins once the portfolio exists, the systems are working, and the trader is in position to take advantage of market opportunity at meaningful size.

Years Two and Three

Years two and three are less about getting established and more about pressing advantage. By this stage, the trader should have a real base to work from. The focus shifts to finding additional opportunities, adding new sources of edge, and taking more meaningful risk when the setup justifies it.

A trader who does very well at QSG is usually not someone who simply maintains a static book. It is someone who builds a foundation and then discovers something worth attacking. That is where the real upside comes from. The business becomes more durable, but it should also become more opportunistic.

What QSG Expects

QSG expects traders to act like independent operators from the beginning. That means moving ideas forward without needing a classroom structure, being honest about what is and is not working, handling risk responsibly, and building with the intention of creating something durable.

The firm provides capital, infrastructure, and a collaborative environment. The trader is expected to make use of it. Some people move quickly. Some do not. The difference is usually not whether someone was given a perfect roadmap. It is whether they can do serious work, respond to evidence, and build something that deserves to scale.

What This Page Is, and What It Is Not

This page is meant to provide transparency into how a new trader typically develops at QSG. It is not a promise, a fixed schedule, or a training syllabus. Timelines vary, and capital allocation is always based on observed work, discipline, and performance.

The goal is not simply to launch strategies. It is for each trader to build a real trading business.
