Technology and Strategy

Technology

At QSG, technology is part of the trading business itself. It shapes how ideas are researched, how strategies are evaluated, and how live trading is run. We focus primarily on systematic, mid-frequency trading in U.S. equities, generally from seconds to days. That puts us in a part of the market where research, execution, and risk all matter, and where the gap between a good idea and a tradable strategy has to be closed cleanly.

We built QSG to support that kind of work. The goal is not to assemble a loose collection of tools and people and hope they fit together. The goal is to have an environment where traders can test, refine, and deploy ideas seriously, with infrastructure that supports live markets and standards that hold up under real conditions.

Software

One of QSG’s defining strengths is the software platform behind the firm. Before QSG existed, our team saw the same problem many firms run into: the person with the market idea and the person building the implementation were often working in different worlds. That created friction, delay, and unnecessary risk. Sometimes it worked. Often it did not. Even when it did, the process was usually harder and less reliable than it should have been.

We built in a different direction. Early on, before QSG was formed, we partnered with a software platform that was already much closer to how we thought systematic trading should be done. When we became independent, we brought that platform in-house and continued building around it. Over time it evolved from a more constrained interface into a much more integrated system for research, testing, monitoring, and deployment.

That mattered because it changed who could build. A trader did not need to be a full-time software engineer to express an idea systematically and test it seriously. At the same time, a strong technical researcher could work in an environment where research was actually connected to live trading rather than getting lost in translation. That remains one of the key differentiators of QSG.

Infrastructure

QSG operates with infrastructure built for live trading and serious research. We maintain colocated connectivity for trading and market data access, along with dedicated hardware and compute for research and backtesting. We are connected to the street through colocation facilities and maintain our own hardware for dedicated compute.

That infrastructure is supported by in-house engineering, data, and IT teams. The point is not to show off hardware or talk about datacenters for their own sake. The point is to have an environment where traders can do real work without constantly fighting the plumbing, and where research and production sit close enough together that live deployment can happen in a controlled way.

Data and Research Environment

Research at QSG draws on both standard market datasets and internally developed data, features, and models. That shared base matters, but it is not meant to be limiting. Traders also add to it as they build their own businesses, whether that means bringing in new datasets, developing new features, or training their own models.

The goal is to give traders a real foundation without forcing everyone into the same playbook. Some edge comes from shared infrastructure. Some edge comes from what an individual trader adds to it over time. The platform is designed to support both.

Machine Learning

Machine learning is used across QSG in practical ways. On the operational side, it helps automate processes and surface areas that need attention. On the trading side, it is used in a range of ways, from working with unstructured data to helping with risk and allocation problems.

We do not treat machine learning as a slogan. It is one set of tools among many. It matters when it improves decisions, and it is irrelevant when it does not. That is how we think about most technology at QSG.

Strategy

Strategy Areas

QSG trades a range of systematic strategies, primarily in U.S. equities and primarily in the mid-frequency range, from seconds to days. Representative areas include:

  • Statistical arbitrage and pairs
  • Share class arbitrage
  • Relative value
  • Liquidity provision across multiple time horizons
  • Index and basket arbitrage
  • Event-driven strategies
  • Special situations
  • News and information-driven strategies
  • Auctions
  • Dispersion
  • Macro and cross-sectional momentum

This list is not meant to be exhaustive. The common thread is not a single style. What matters is that the work can be researched seriously, understood in terms of risk, and deployed in a controlled way.

Putting Strategy and Technology Together

What This Means at QSG

For a developing trader, this means ideas can be tested and refined in a serious environment. For an experienced trader, it means the infrastructure can support a real trading business rather than a patchwork of tools. For a technically strong researcher, it means there is a path from research into live markets without getting stuck in endless translation between teams.

The platform does not replace judgment. It makes good work more scalable and more trustworthy. That is what technology should do in a trading firm.
